You can shut off an account and afterwards later on reactivate it. While it's shut off, people can't see your timeline or look for you, though some information, such as messages you sent, might still show up.
If you erase your account, it's gone forever and can not be reactivated. Facebook claims that they "delay removal a couple of days after it's asked for" which a removal request is canceled if you log back into your account throughout that period. They better claim that it can use up to 90 days to remove information stored in back-up systems.
How To Permanently Deactivate Facebook
- > Click on the down arrowhead at top left of any type of page.
- > Select Settings.
- > Click in the general tab in left column.
- > Select Manage Account.
- > Scroll down to Deactivate your account.
- > Click Decativate your account.
- > You are then required to enter your password.
To permanently shut your account.
You need to click here to inform Facebook of your intent to shut your account and after that select Remove My Account.
